DOE/DOD CERCLA-Related Projects

Eglin AFB, Florida-RI/FS/RA Support, US Air Force

Designed and implemented a source characterization and groundwater plume monitoring program at a U.S. Air Force base facility. The groundwater plume was identified (diesel fuel and solvents), and a remediation system was installed; however, the source of the solvents was undetermined. The rationale for the sampling and the subsequent risk assessment was to determine the source of the chlorinated solvents and to ascertain whether or not the air stripping system was effective at remediating the groundwater plume and could be dismantled.

Hanford 100 K Area RI/FS Work Plans, Bovay Northwest

Provided subcontractor project management and technical lead roles to Bovay Northwest for preparing RI/FS work plans, including Sampling and Analysis Plans (SAPs) and Quality Assurance Project Plans (QAPjPs), for the Westinghouse Hanford Company. The work plans were developed to characterize problems associated with contaminant sources and groundwater operable units at the 100 K Area reactor facility under a tri-party agreement between the DOE, the EPA, and the Washington Department of Ecology.

DOE Environmental Survey - Various DOE Facilities, DOE

The DOE Environmental Survey, a DOE headquarters' multi- year, multi-million dollar program, involved a comprehensive environmental evaluation at DOE facilities across the country. Extensive sampling and analysis programs for the DOE Environmental Survey were conducted, including preparing site sampling plans, implementing sampling, interpreting analytical data, and writing reports for several DOE facilities. The staff of Pioneer Technical Services, Inc. were key participants in the investigations at the following sites: Hanford, Washington; Savannah River, South Carolina; Los Alamos, New Mexico; Sandia, New Mexico; and the Strategic Petroleum Reserve at Bryan Mound, Texas. All work utilized EPA- established field sampling, documentation, custody, and analytical procedures. Certain samples were collected within radiation zones, and some samples had hazardous levels of toxic volatile organics. Also worked with high explosives requiring special safe work practices and personal protective equipment. All sampling strictly adhered to EPA Standard Operating Procedures. In addition, assisted with the installation of RCRA monitoring wells and well points and developed innovative sampling equipment. Sampling teams were regularly audited by the EPA. Facility audits, site sampling plans, field sampling, and data interpretation phases of the program required application of all CERCLA/SARA, RCRA, state hazardous waste regulations, and extensive DOE regulations regarding radioactive and mixed wastes.
